ROAD BIKE NORTH GEORGIA Here are two road rides in the mountains of North Georgia. I found these route maps in a book at the public library. these two routes are each half of the infamous "Six Gap Century". "Classic" Three Gap 53 miles. Starts in Dahlonega and the route follows US19 and 19/129 and GA180 and 60. The route crosses the Appalachian Trail, and goes by Vogel State Park, Lake Winfield Scott, town of Suches, and past the grave of Trahlyta (a Cherokee Indian Princess). You have the option of going up to the top of Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak. This road is without a doubt the steepest paved road in Georgia! Even if you don't climb to the peak of Brasstown Bald, the Hogpen Gap climb averages 7% for 7 miles, with sections as steep as 15%, so bring appropriate gearing. The ride starts in the town of Helen, crosses the Appalachian Trail twice, and has many incredible views all along the way. Click the map for a close up of the route. |
