Day 1 – My first day watching the Giro
I opted to watch the
3 circuit uphill section at the end of the race instead of watching the
in-town finish.
I also got a souvenir that made my day a great Giro Day.
The
day started with driving from the outskirts of Venice to the town that is
famous for human chess sets. Actual humans dress up and are directed
position themselves on the chess board, too bad no physical contact. I used
the autobahn to get close to Marostica before I had to take the scenic
highways. On the Autobahn cars do go fast but not as fast as in
Germany. There was an occasion where I was passed by an Alfa Romeo (all
I saw was couple blinks of its high beam and 4 exhaust tips), and I looked
down on my speedometer it was 180km/h.
I
drove by the finish line and followed the line of cyclist and pedestrians to
see where they were going - up the hill to the 3 circuit section. Cars
are not allowed on the closed section of the course as of sunrise. There were
riders and observers from everywhere ranging from children to adults to
elderly. They were on foot, bicycles, motorcycles, and anything that
rolls. The older they are the louder they dress.
